Potter Park Zoo is seeking volunteers for FrogWatch USA – a citizen science program
LANSING, MI --- FrogWatch USA – a “Citizen Science” program run through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and organized locally by Potter Park Zoo – is an opportunity for individuals to get involved in conservation efforts by volunteering to monitor frog and toad populations in Michigan. The program will run from April through October and training is scheduled at Potter Park Zoo March 8, 9, and 16.
FrogWatch USA seeks to educate and involve individuals, families and groups in the collection and reporting of data on the frog and toad populations in the community. Amphibians are considered indicators of environmental health and programs like FrogWatch USA help scientists understand the scale and causes of the immense population declines we are seeing across the world.
Potter Park Zoo’s FrogWatch USA teaches volunteers about our local amphibian species, how to listen for and identify their calls as well as how to collect the data required for the program. Volunteers are then released into the wild to start listening. All information gathered will be entered into a national database where it can be used in wetland preservation and in monitoring local amphibian populations.
Potter Park Zoo FrogWatch is offering five training courses in March and volunteers need only attend one of these sessions. Volunteer training will be held Saturday, March 8 from 5 to 8 p.m., Sunday, March 9 from 12 to 3 p.m., and from 4 to 7 p.m., and Sunday, March 16 from 12 to 3 p.m. and from 4 to 7 p.m.
Classes are free and will be held in the zoo’s Education Building. Pre-registration is not required but it is highly encouraged. This program is not only for adults, it is also suitable for any school aged child, but please note that anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
