| This African great lake is estimated to be second or third in volume, and second deepest in the world (after Lake Baikal). Lake Tanganyika is divided between four countries: Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, and Zambia. The water from the lake flows into the Congo River system, and eventually into the Atlantic Ocean. As you enter this eco-region of the Zoo, you will notice immediate similarities and distinct differences between this African savanna and the Michigan Plains. You’ll see familiar African animals here; the lion, rhino, mandrill, and okapi; who have all adapted to the higher elevation and cooler climate of the Tanganyika region. | ![]() |
