Become
a Volunteer
If you've ever taken
a zoo tour, attended one of our classes, or gone to a special zoo
event then you've had the opportunity to appreciate what our zoo
volunteers do. But did you know that you, too, could easily work
at the zoo, learn about wildlife, and receive an education about
wild animals by becoming a volunteer yourself?
Some people
who visit the Potter Park Zoo think that our docent volunteers must have degrees
in zoology or teaching certificates to work here, but that's not true! Anyone
with the desire to learn about wildlife and teach others about its wonders can
join us. And if you're
not really sure you want to be an educator, we have many other opportunities for
those of you who would like to support our zoo with the generous donation of something
that's really special and rare these days--your time. In this section you can
read about volunteer opportunities and sign up for a program. Thanks for your
interest. Volunteers are the valued people who make the Potter Park Zoo what it
is today!

"Being
a docent is fun! It's also great to be part of a group of people who freely
give of their time, energy and smiles. The Potter Park Zoo docents work
to better our commun- ity and to reach out to people of all ages. I've
been a docent since the spring of 1996. It's been an oppor- tunity to
see how zoos have become vital learning centers. I've also gained self-confidence
by learning to handle a wide variety of animals, even snakes! "As
docents, we teach respect for animals and the importance of conservation.
We promote an understanding of the value of every living creature and
its own unique characteristics. I would recommend being a Potter Park
Zoo docent to anyone. It offers many rewarding experiences and a chance
to make a positive difference in the lives of others." --Patty
