Docents: Our Volunteer Educators
If you have the time,
and if you love teaching students of all ages about the incredible
creatures with whom we share this planet, then this is the volunteer
opportunity for you. Docents are trained, adult volunteers who donate
their time and energy educating zoo visitors, classes of students,
families, and local organizations on zoo grounds, in schools, and
in a variety of other settings.
After completing training
classes, Docents conduct zoo tours, give classroom presentations
involving our education animals, provide hands-on learning opportunities,
and assist staff with promotions and special events.
Some Other Benefits
As a docent, you'll receive
a free family membership to the Potter Park Zoological Society after
one year of service, which gives you and your family free admission
to the Potter Park Zoo and over 100 zoos around the country. You'll
also receive a discount at our gift store. But the main benefit
is being able to participate in one of the best wildlife education
programs in the country and help people learn and understand the
importance of preserving our wildlife and environment.
What Are Your Responsibilities?
We ask for a minimal
commitment of just 50 hours per year of your time (that's less than
an hour a week). You will also need to complete our education program
(there's a $25 fee for the class and supplies, plus $6 annual dues--the
first year's dues are covered by the original $25 class fee). Other
than that, we just ask for your dedication and commitment.
